Online virus scammers hit record levels

Tuesday 23rd August 2011

There has recently been a massive upsurge in the number of companies telephoning people [unsolicited] and claiming to be from any number of companies

There has recently been a massive upsurge in the number of companies telephoning people [unsolicited] and claiming to be from any number of companies such as Thenerdsupport, Tech Aviators or PCTechnosupport – the list is nearly endless. These companies are all scams and without going into the heavily ‘techy’ aspects of the fraud they will tell you that you have a virus, ask you to download some software to remove it – your computer is more or less toast if you do. Some may even charge you £185 to remove it.

This happened me recently and thankfully I have enough knowledge of IT to know what the scam was about. I reported the scam to consumer direct 0845 4040506 and the Telephone Preference Service 0845 0700707 both these are very useful if you are receiving these calls. The key thing to do if you are receiving these calls is just to put the phone down – do not interact with the person.

There are many people in North Down who are IT vulnerable and could easily be taken in by this complex scam the risks are extensive as all your financial details become compromised. If anyone wants further details regarding these scams please do not hesitate to contact me.
