Bangor - Councillor Peter J. Martin

Martin stops the sale of illegal replica firearms.

Friday 2nd September 2011

I was made aware by a constituent that a shop on Bridge Street was selling Realistic Imitation Firearms or RIFs. In fact the guns in question, which are replica Berettas were in the store window at the end of last week.

I was made aware by a constituent that a shop on Bridge Street was selling Realistic Imitation Firearms or RIFs in fact the guns in question, which are replica Berettas were in the store window at the end of last week. There is clear legislation governing the sale of such weapons laid out in the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 and it makes clear that it is an offense to sell a RIF in the United Kingdom. Unless you were familiar in handling firearms you would not be able to tell the difference between the RIFs that this store was selling and the real firearm. I have informed Bangor PSNI regarding the matter and asked them to investigate. Clearly the sale of these firearms can only lead to tragic circumstances; in the hands of a child and in the wrong situation it is unthinkable what might occur. I am confident that now the police have been made aware of the situation they will take immediate action
