Martin welcomes Proms in the Park.

Saturday nights ‘Proms in the Park’ was a great success in highlighting the very best of British and Irish talent. We were treated to a compilation of Snow Patrol songs played by the Ulster Orchestra, the wonderful song ‘Galileo’ written and sung by Declan O’Rourke and of course the rousing and patriotic ‘Rule Britannia’ played via the BBC link from the Royal Albert Hall. Despite threatening inclement weather the concert remained dry and all those who attended had a great time. We also seemed to get plenty of national and international air time on the BBC due to the Welsh Concert being cancelled because of the Hurricane sweeping across the British Isles. The venue looked spectacular and it really showcased Bangor to the tens of millions of people watching worldwide. It brought significant numbers of visitors to Bangor that day and therefore trade to our town centre which I’m sure our local traders welcomed. I do hope that this will encourage tourism over the coming year from folks on the on mainland.
In reflection it would be good to have a little more time linked to the RAH at the end of the concert to enjoy Sir Henry Wood’s Fantasia on British Sea Songs and Parry’s Jerusalem. I will be reflecting these thoughts to the BBC.
Yours, in all sincerity,
Councillor Peter J Martin [DUP]
