When I first presented to Council the concept of making Bangor the first WiFi zone in any town in Northern Ireland it was warmly welcomed. Unfortunately in the intervening two months NDBC’s financial circumstances have changed and there is now a freeze on all new spending.

When I first presented to Council the concept of making Bangor the first WiFi zone in any town in Northern Ireland it was warmly welcomed. Unfortunately in the intervening two months NDBC’s financial circumstances have changed and there is now a freeze on all new spending. Whilst this is disappointing I am determined to play my part in respecting the freeze in order to ensure we deliver the lowest domestic rate possible for constituents.

I am therefore delighted that the Council is now examining cost–neutral options in order to deliver this project. There will be a number of benefits if we can deliver on this initiative. It will support business, providing wireless internet access in shops and precincts. It will also create advertising revenue from local companies which should enable the project to pay for itself.

Finally it will provide social benefits for all internet users allowing fast, filtered internet access in the town centre. At the moment the project is out for market testing and I will keep residents informed of progress on this issue. This would be a wonderful first for the Borough of North Down
