This week at Council, Age North Down and Ards presented one of their services to members and made them aware of the crucial work that they do in reassuring and supporting the elderly residents of North Down.
This week at Council, Age North Down and Ards presented one of their services to members and made them aware of the crucial work that they do in reassuring and supporting the elderly residents of North Down. Good Morning Call is a service open to all folk over 50 who would like a phone call from a volunteer to reassure and ‘check in’ them in the morning. It runs 365 days a year and affords all our elderly some contact every day if they wish it.
I was so impressed by the dedication and passion staff have for this highly effective service delivering tangible benefits to the elderly in North Down. In a recent survey by the Age Sector Platform it was discovered that nearly 2/3 of the elderly cite ‘the fear of crime’ as their major concern. The British Crime Survey then stated that two of the key reasons for the perceived fear of crime is ‘feeling powerless’ and feeling vulnerable’ – these are two of the aspects that Good Morning Call seeks to combat. As a member of Council I am proud that we have such dedicated staff and volunteers working here in our Borough showing such great care and concern to those in need.
In terms of Northern Ireland we have a larger proportion of elderly folk living in North Down and the work of AGENDA and in particular this service is invaluable to some of the most vulnerable in our society.
