Lack of respect for environment or people

Monday 28th May 2012

Over the weekend the warm weather brought many people out to enjoy our parks and beaches in North Down – unfortunately a small minority of these folk have demonstrated no respect for our environment or other people.

Over the weekend the warm weather brought many people out to enjoy our parks and beaches in North Down – unfortunately a small minority of these folk have demonstrated no respect for our environment or other people.

Nearly every beach in North Down suffered with litter with Ballyholme, Crawfordsburn, Helens Bay and Sea Park being the worst hit. There were beer cans, bottles and food wrapping scattered across our beautiful beaches. In fact I found some of the bottles on Ballyholme beach had seen smashed against the wall and you can imagine the danger this presents to families with young children coming the next morning.

This week I will be asking for a meeting with the Police and Council Officers regarding the formulation of a strategy to address stricter enforcement of our no alcohol policy and how we can best effect prosecutions. I believe that if we have zero tolerance to this sort of behaviour then people will get the message.

We also need to address how best to clean up beaches which are littered the night before. This in effect, is not about litter, but about respect. The beaches of North Down are for everyone to enjoy and we welcome tourists and locals, but not if they plan to destroy our environment or to spoil other folks enjoyment.

People who come to our beaches and scatter waste and litter in their wake clearly have little regard for our environment or other people. Where possible these louts should be prosecuted and fined
