“Great news on Queens’ Parade eyesore

Tuesday 4th December 2012

The news that the Minister for Social Development, Nelson McCausland, has instructed his Department to purchase the land on Queens Parade is most certainly to be welcomed.

The news that the Minister for Social Development, Nelson McCausland, has instructed his Department to purchase the land on Queens Parade is most certainly to be welcomed. It is a key point in our fight to get the seafront eyesore transformed into something that we can be very proud of it Bangor and something that will encourage local tourism. I have previously indicated in the press that there seemed to be no possibility of the developers moving this proposal any further due to their inability to raise the necessary capital for the project. I know that this issue has been a constant source of frustration to the ratepayers but the Council does not own the land and obviously, even if they did, could not afford to fund the development because of the large amount of capital required.

This announcement however does not point towards any quick fix; but is certainly a step in the right direction. Key in all this is to get the right plans in place so that the outcome will be the best possible for the residents. DSD will be speaking and consulting with local residents, businesses owners and groups that have shown an interest in the development as they seek to progress the plans. This is a unique opportunity to transform our sea front into something that Bangor truly deserves.
