We indeed live in testing economic times where just last week we witnessed another long standing retail giant, HMV, go into administration. For many years we have had to worry about many of our local services being rationalised or disappearing altogether and one of those local services has been our Post Offices.

It is indeed great news then that our local Post Office in Ballyholme has survived and in fact is being refitted and equipped to ensure its survival and the jobs it provides. I welcome the investment that is being spent to ensure it continues to provide important services to the local community. For many people, especially the elderly, the Post Office is a critical link in their day to day lives. Most local branches offer not only key financial services but travel money, passport forms and driving license applications.

This refurbishment will mean that the Ballyholme Post Office will be closed from Friday 15th February and will reopen on Wednesday 20th. The Post Office have indicated that this modernisation should mean longer opening hours and this is great news for residents. I have spoken to the Postmaster in Ballyholme and he is excited about the change as it will not only be a more customer focused environment but also more customer friendly.
