DUP representatives welcome DETI confirmation of super fast broadband commitment for Deanfield/Ballycrochan

Monday 11th November 2013

For over a year we have both worked on this issue for our constituents in Deanfield and Ballycrochan. Over the period of 2012/13 we had correspondence and conversations with both senior management in BT and also with representatives from DETI. In total DETI have confirmed a total public sector subsidy of £19.3m is available and we are very happy that the area of Deanfield/Ballycrochan will be included as part of this capital spend

Joint Press Release
Peter Weir MLA and Cllr Peter Martin

For over a year we have both worked on this issue for our constituents in Deanfield and Ballycrochan. Over the period of 2012/13 we had correspondence and conversations with both senior management in BT and also with representatives from DETI. In total DETI have confirmed a total public sector subsidy of £19.3m is available and we are very happy that the area of Deanfield/Ballycrochan will be included as part of this capital spend. This was revealed by the DETI minister, Arlene Foster last week as a result of a written question from her party colleague Peter Weir.

Cllr Peter Weir MLA

“I welcome the response from DETI to my Assembly question, which will be a tremendous boost to businesses and households throughout North Down. The answer indicates that within a relatively short period of time that virtually all premises in North Down will be able to avail of basic broadband and 90% will be on superfast broadband. This is an issue that we have been pushing for some time, with my colleague Cllr Peter Martin particularly highlighting the difficulties in the Deanfield/Ballycrochan area. It is particularly gratifying to see delivery in that area, to go alongside the good work done in the town centre. With tenders for implementation of delivery closing on 6th November, I believe we can look forward to both progress and delivery in the near future.”

Cllr Peter Martin

“This is a great result for the people of Deanfield who raised this issue with us over a year ago. Hopefully BT will fast track the super fast provision to North Down and I intend to write to both BT and DETI regarding this issue. As the usefulness of the Internet increases so does the demand for bandwidth and therefore DETIs roll out of this further provision is to be warmly welcomed. A number of other areas of North Down are set to benefit, Rathmore and Cranley are just two examples. This demonstrates that effective lobbying does work for constituents and we hope they are happy with this forward progress”
