Concern grows over environmental damage at Portavoe

Wednesday 23rd April 2014

Many constituents and residents are very concerned at the ongoing environmental disaster occurring as we speak at Portavoe Reservoir. Northern Ireland Water seem intent on completely draining the complete reservoir and NIEA appear content with the environmental impact of the action. Both Ministers involved Mark Durkan [DOE] and Danny Kennedy [DRD] have been made painfully aware of the fury that many residents in North Down and Ards feel about this current action.

Both Ministers involved Mark Durkan [DOE] and Danny Kennedy [DRD] have been made painfully aware of the fury that many residents in North Down and Ards feel about this current action. Councillors also were not consulted about the impending draining but rather learned about it from residents who noticed falling water levels. Residents understand that the overall responsibility lies squarely with NIW and as such are planning a meeting on Friday 25th, 11.00am at Bangor Castle to support those Councillors who are fighting for Portavoe when they meet a representative from Northern Ireland Water at the meeting of the Portavoe Joint Council Working Group.

“I am concerned not only for the environmental damage being caused but also at the lack of information coming out of NIW and subsequently DRD. Clearly it would appear they thought they take this action without repercussion – they were wrong
