Council honours Battle of Britain heroes

Thursday 10th September 2015

In September the sleepy seaside village of Ballyhalbert on the Ards Peninsula traveled back in time to 1940, when the Battle of Britain raged in the burning blue skies over Kent. Cllr Peter Martin and Pete Bleakney [from the Polish RAF Group] had organised the event to remember our fallen but also to promote good relations in Northern Ireland.

Cllr Peter Martin

“It was an honour to have helped put this event together which remembered both British and Polish pilots who fought to preserve our democracy in the UK. We must never forget those in our forces who paid the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf. To see both our own RAF personnel and the Honourary Polish Consul in Northern Ireland lay wreaths at the Ballyhalbert RAF Control Tower was a powerful statement 75 years on from the Battle of Britain”
